Fran’s Rant: Bills

Bill’s Bill’s Bill’s – Why am I always getting Bill’s mail?

mail pileTraveling and catching up with our mail is always a bit challenging but the most frustrating part of getting mail is reading the bills and catching the errors that these big companies make for a couple dollars here and a few cents there. It’s hardly worth my time to call and correct the bill but why should these big corporations get more than then deserve because of an error THEY made?!?

phone rageMy first call was to FedEx who charges me a pick up fee of $3 on at least 2 packages each month. FedEx never picks up my packages. I have DROP OFF set as default in their program and I never change it. I call them every month for $3, $6, or $9 and each time I call I have less and less tolerance. So when the rep asked me if I would mind holding while he adjusted my bill I yelled, “Not at all. I LOVE holding.” And with that I get a dial tone. As my blood pressure hits the boiling point I call back and ask for a supervisor and I proceed to sarcastically repeat my scenario. She responds very politely, “I see from our records that you call us every month about this same issue so I’m going to issue you a credit for this entire invoice for your trouble.” Score! My bill was $237. BUT she had no solution to stop it from happening again. So the saga continues.

boardroom clownsThen I get a letter from my mortgage company, Bank of America, saying that my homeowner insurance has lapsed and they were going to purchase insurance for me “at a much higher rate”. But my homeowner insurance WAS paid – in full and on time – a month ago! The BofA rep treated me like a deadbeat who didn’t pay her bills and screaming at him was doing no good at all so I called my insurance rep who enlightened me about the state laws. Turns out the insurance companies must tell lenders about account defaults before they actually default to give the lender time to purchase other insurance if the customer does not pay. Don’t bother reading that sentence again because IT DOESN’T MAKE ANY SENSE! I would love to be a fly on the wall in the boardroom full of idiots and come up with these ridiculous rules and regulations. Scratch that – my heart couldn’t handle it.

Moving on the US Postal Service. I got a bill to renew my PO box and by mistake I paid for 6 months instead of the full year. When I went back to give them additional funds they said they couldn’t take any more money until the next bill is due. You just can’t make this stuff up. “We can’t take any more money” – really?!? This from an entity that’s been broke since the Eisenhower administration.

So, is it worth the potential coronary to scream at these corporate pions for a lousy few bucks each month? During our busy months when I don’t have time to scrutinize the bills I just pay the total and never know if I was overcharged $6 or $60. They say ignorance is bliss. They might be right. Or is it important to make these big companies keep their word and their proper pricing structure? I don’t know the answer to this one.

Hi Fran! Please don’t ever stop your rants! I love them and most often agree as well. You write in such a way that I feel like I have just been out for a girlfriend lunch with you! (Something we never seem to fit in) Maybe in NC next summer! Take care and stay well!
    Hugs, Pat

I am totally on the same OCD train with you on this one. I tell myself the same thing, “don’t sweat the small stuff’, but then if I don’t who will?? See my quandary? It’s a vicious cycle.

My dad was a very hard worker and very passionate at everything he did, and I took on that passion as well and can’t shake the attitude that if you can do it right, don’t do it at all. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but it definitely shouldn’t be WRONG!
